The Veil Grows Thin

Still water has long been a mirror between the worlds.

The harvest is gathered and the leaves are falling back to the earth. As October draws to a close, we will arrive at Samhain, the old turning of the year, when the light wanes and the world draws inward.

Wise women have always known this season as a threshold. It is a time to honor those who came before us, to tend the quiet places within, and to release what we no longer need to carry into the dark months ahead.

Our grandmothers' grandmothers lit candles in the windows and set a place at the table for the ones they had lost. They knew that endings are not the opposite of life but part of its balanced rhythm, the necessary rest before the return.

During the last week of October, we invite you to try a simple practice:

  • Light a candle at dusk and speak the name of someone you miss.

  • Write down one thing you are ready to let go of, and offer it to the earth or the fire.

  • Sit in the dark for a few minutes and simply listen.

The Wheel keeps turning. What you release now makes room for what will rise in spring.

However you mark this season, may it draw you closer to those who came before you.
